Peter Manson was awarded the ‘Outstanding Contribution Award’ at the New Zealand Association for Resource Management (NZARM) Conference last week. Well done Pete, we are privileged to have you in our team. Champagne!
Representatives of the Whangawehi who attended the Asia Pacific International River Prize awards dinner last Tuesday evening in Sydney were ecstatic to win the Pacific category. The group was grateful just to have been chosen as a finalist but was blown out of the water when they were announced as winners. The judges were very impressed with just how well the group collaborated with tangata whenua, the community and it’s sponsors along with it’s on the ground work which is diligently monitored.
This Awards has allowed the group to be part of the Alumni network, a network of river practitioners who operate all around the world. This will certainly help the group raise its profile and extend its ability to operate at a higher level.
As the winner of the Awards, the WCMG has also been encouraged by the International River Foundation to develop a relationship with a sister project in a foreign country. Passing on the knowledge was a consistent theme during the evening ceremony and several twin projects were presented during the symposium. This support offers an opportunity for the WCMG to influence one of it’s pacific neighbours.

A big thank you to all who have been involved, it is a wonderful achievement.
Yesterday, the group was invited by Beef and Lamb to do a presentation to a group of landowners farming around the Rere falls area in Gisborne. This new initiative is looking at protecting the river and enhancing the biodiversity of this part of the Region. Consultants and MFE were attending the meeting with the idea of assisting this fledging group. It was a pleasure to be able to give advice and encourage this community.
Thank you to the Committee for taking the time to come and help with this presentation.
Last week, Pat and Sue O’Brien paid Kathleen Mato a visit in Gisborne. Kathleen was very proud for the group to have received the Supreme Award at the Green Ribbon Awards. Kathleen received quite a few Awards during her time as the Leader of the Group. Well done Kathleen for the Legacy you leave.

“The Green Ribbon Awards recognise the recognise outstanding contributions by individuals, communities and organisations to protect and manage New Zealand’s environment”.
The WCMG has been selected as a finalist to the most prestigious environmental awards in the country, it is a privilege and a significant recognition for our landowners, community and Marae. It is the 4th time in a row that the group competes but this year, the WCMG was able to demonstrate for the first time via HBRC input that the work done was improving significantly water quality. This is unique in Hawkes Bay and we hope that the hard work achieved by all our volunteers will be recognised and awarded by a winner prize in the “caring for our water” category.
