Key milestones for Te Aratia

December 2022 : The walkway was officially opened on the 8th of December 2022 by Pat O’Brien, WCMG Chair and Eva Coop, student at Te Mahia school and landowner in the catchment. It was a delight to meet with sponsors and community members who have helped get this project over the line.

September 2022 : The Whangawehi Committee decided to plan for an opening ceremony on the 8th of December 2022 at 11 am at the entrance of the walkway. There is still a lot of repair work to finish but we are hoping to get this work done by then. Thank you all for your patience.

November 2021 : A severe storm hit the Whangawehi catchment in early November 2021 creating major slips and slumps. This has pushed back teh opening of the track to April 2022. In the meantime and for health and safety reasons, we ask the public to stay away from the walkway and respect the NO ENTRY sign installed at the beginning of the track.

December 2020 : The Whangawehi walkway is blessed and the diggers started building the first kilometers of track.

November 2020 : construction of a waharoa at the entrance of the walkway with support from EIT and Carters.

September 2020 : Heritage New Zealand grants a consent for the construction of the walkway after months of consultation with Marae and Iwi representatives.

July 2020 : Logic Solutions finalises the design for the track.

June 2020 : Gisborne survey records the easement and get it approved by LINZ.

2019 : ongoing discussion with the community and the NZ Access Commission regarding a name for the walkway.
