On the 2d of December 2021, Todd Murphy, Owner and Operator of Tip Truck Ltd came to access the work required of him. During this health and Safety visit, Todd went through all the tracks that he will use to stock pile 600 m3 of metal along the river. This work will help the graveling team by making the metal easily accessible and therefore should speed up the completion of the walkway.
A big thank you to Todd for spending time for the project

A severe storm hit the Whangawehi catchment in early November 2021 creating major slips and slumps. This has pushed back the opening date of the track to April 2022. In the meantime and for health and safety reasons, we ask the public to stay away from the walkway and respect the NO ENTRY sign installed at the beginning of the track. Thank you all for being understanding.

With more than 180 participating countries, the ENERGY GLOBE Award is today’s most prestigious environmental award. It is awarded annually to projects saving our environment by personal action, sustainable projects or campaigns for raising awareness in sustainability. The awards for these many projects are presented in the countries where the project has been implemented in cooperation with Energy Globe partners, in particular with the international offices of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and UNIDO.
This is an amazing recognition for the work done by the Whangawehi Catchment Management Group, the community and Marae. We will keep you posted on the ceremony.

On Monday the 29th of November 2021, Jeff Carters from Southern Star Trails biked the track to assess the damages on the Whangawehi walkway after the November 2021 storm. This field visit will allow him to better plan the next stage for the repair work. His team will be back on board with machineries mid January.

Chris Wilson, local artist, has been working hard for the walkway. He is preparing a number of seats and tables that will be installed along the walkway in the next few months. A big thank you to Chris for his time and dedication.

On Wednesday the 24th of November 2021, the Whangawehi team met with Dean and John from Mahia Forest to discuss signs installation in the upper part of the catchment. The November storm has affected the forest and some tracks are still blocked. Dean and John are planning the reopening of the main tracks. A big thank you to Dean for making it easy to operate in the forest. The first signs will be installed next week. We will keep you posted.

In early November, Mahia Peninsula received 350 mm of rainfall over a week. This storm created many landslides in the landscape. The walkway has been severely affected with several deep land slides damaging the track. Several key access points have been temporarily cut. We need to wait for the slips to dry out before we can start any remedial work and reroute the track ( and the fences) in certain parts of the walkway. It will take several months before we can restore track access and reinstate fence lines and track.
We thank you all for your patience and ask the public to respect the signs and not access the walkway please
While the tracks are drying up, the Whangawehi team is busy working on the walkway. Extensive spraying has taken place and will be followed up with brush cutting to tidy up certain areas of the track. Gates and rails have being added to the track to secure some parts of the walkway. The next big step will be to gravel the track. We will keep you updated on this as soon as this takes place.
On Tuesday the 19th of October 2021, Nic dropped off some fencing material along the track but was challenged with some wet sections on the farm track. Scott and Sam from Southern Star Trails are facing the same issues but managed to keep going with their repairs work. Several culverts have been added to drain some springs and wet spots encroaching on the track. With the weather improving, we hope that access will be easier which will make the gravelling less challenging. We will keep you in the loop.
Access to the track is still not allowed to the public due to health and Safety risks. A chain was installed at the main entrance way to stop people from entering the walkway.
